How far is it to the library (coffee shop, movie house, et.) and should I walk?

This is a great little hackthat uses Google’s superb mapping application to help record distances traveled during a running or walking workout. Simpler still, if there is a route you usually take to walk the dog and you’ve always wondered how far you travel each night, you can map it out.How far is the walk to the library? What if you walked to work, how far is it and (if you turn on the calorie burning calculator) how many calories will you shed if you walked?People often marvel at the thought of our family walking to the North Market from our house. Turns out that’s 1.904 miles and I’d burn about 273.59 calories each way.
That’s good news because I’d have to eat some Jeni’s ice cream while I’m there. This is a nice way to plan out local routes and help to understand distances if you live in the city. These days everyone in Columbus is so ready to jump in the car and drive somewhere that the idea of walking a mile seems absurd. I’ve definitely noticed that city dwellers are more apt to walk than suburbanites. Maybe that’s because there are more places to walk to? Do you think your Columbus Neighborhood is walkable? |
