Just How BIG is Columbus, Ohio?

Well, we’ve grown to 1.72 million .
In a report released Thursday, the census bureau said Columbus - growing to 1.72 million from 1.61 million - ranked 32nd in largest numerical gain (2000-2006) in population among the nation’s 361 metropolitan areas.
Where, nationally, are we ranked in terms of population? I find people from out of town are often surprised that Columbus is larger than Baltimore, Seattle, Washington, Charlotte, Milwaukee and Boston but it seems to be a sticky question depending on how you go about it. As a Realtor, I’ve always relied on Columbus being the 13th biggest city in the country as the answer but I can’t really tell you how I arrived at that number. Are you measuring metro area or city limits?
Wikipedia says we’re at #15, between San Francisco and Austin but at a population of only 730,657, which, as the census bureau notes, is about a million shy. This begs the question, how are those two very disparate numbers conceived?
It all depends on what you’re measuring. Columbus is very spread out as far as cities go but no doubt the 1.72 million number takes in more than the city limits of Columbus proper. The city’s website states that, “The 2000 population of Columbus is 711,470, a 12.4% increase since 1990. Franklin County was the fastest growing urban county in Ohio between 1990 and 2000, with an 11.1% increase, for a total 2000 population of 1,068,978.” Which seems to indicate that they skipped right to the population of Franklin county and didn’t bother to stop at the city limits.
