Another somewhat useless but cool real estate gadget

How the suburbs were won - Columbus circa 1998The folks over at Trulia continue to try to outcool the rest with this product called HindSight.  While last week’s google announcement regarding the city streets view was impressive, it isn’t in Ohio yet. Trulia recently received a round of investment cash and it’ll be interesting to see if they, GoogleBase, Zillow or some one else ends up being the new Realtor.com, aka the first or most used real estate web site on the net.

Anyway, this site gives an idea of how Columbus was settled , starting in 1870. Type in your zip code or city and watch the sprawl catch up to you.  Of course it’s not perfect. This view of Olde Towne East and Bexley, only received 3% of the 70,004 homes in the area and only had 1269 visible.  It’s interesting to see the progression East away from downtown and then a big resurgence in German Village and metro in the late 80s and 90s.

  1. Hi Joe, thanks for linking to Trulia Hindsight. At the scales you were looking at in your view of Olde Towne East and Bexley, we have to limit the number of properties we show so we can animate them. Hopefully 3% of properties is an interesting enough sample.

It’s worth noting that if you zoom in a few times you’ll see that the database does have pretty much every property in the area, we just can’t draw them all at once for whole cities - yet :)

  2. Very nice this blog =)
