Is this Columbus Neighborhood Safe? - finally, a convenient answer for home buyers

Crime map for the Short North over the last three weeksI get asked about the safety of neighborhoods all the time. “What do you think about this neighborhood—is it safe? Would you let your kids live here?” In general, I answer with a few sentences about how everyone has a different comfort level in regard to their surroundings and give a vague response that puts the responsibility back on the buyer to find out just how safe a neighborhood is.

This is because as a Realtor, I really can’t answer that kind of question without the potential for breaking the law in regard to “steering” clients where to live, and more importantly, where not to live. Enter, CrimeReports.com Now I can direct you to an awesome new site where the Columbus Police Department uploads its data. Crime statistics can be viewed on a google map mashup like the one pictured here for the Short North and 43201 zip code over the last three weeks. Check out all those (V)thefts from vehicles, yikes.

It’s beautiful, it’s informative, it’s great information for everybody to know; not just those buying a home in or moving to Columbus, Ohio. Check out the site and put in your zip code. Remember to look at the type of crime too. Is it a smash and grab or a violent assault? Call the local police department’s local precinct house. They can tell you if crime is going up or coming down in the Columbus Neighborhood you might want to call home.

You can even receive daily, weekly or monthly e-mail alerts about crime in your neighborhood by signing up. This is currently a free service to the city of Columbus and one that I feel fills what was a gaping hole in the reporting of local crime stats.

You can always view criminal-incident reports, which can be searched by date, neighborhood, victim or business name at columbuspolice.org/reports.

  1. Having this information available can help a home owner decide what type of area is safest. You can also find out where the sexual predators live and this is something to be considered when buying.

  2. Good stuff Joe. I commend the Columbus Police for contributing and acknowledging that the public wants and has a right to quick and easy access to crime information. Hopefully this site will catch on and many more will follow the lead.

  3. I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. I hate that “loaded question” from buyers. The city of Chicago is listed but unfortunately I work in the southwest suburbs and none of them have joined up with this service. Maybe in the future.
